for how we're going to get through this. >> reporter: first lady michelle obama gets a better review. >> i got the clips in the morning. i thought she did a great job. >> reporter: ann romney's job now is to help her hurt better connect with women and as analysts say to humanize him. criticism his wife says is misplaced. >> because of the attacks that have been made on him i'm not surprised at all. but to not be able to talk about the part or the piece he's been out there helping other. he does these things, but guess what? he doesn't talk about those thing. so it's been my job to have to stand up and talk about those things. >> reporter: with the election two months ago, ann romney keeps up a busy campaign pace hoping to bridge that gap. she told us, i know i'll be back in virginia. julie carey, news 4. >>> mitt romney will be on "meet the press" tomorrow at 10:30 right here on nbc 4. >> what do you want first, the good or the bad news? we've got both when it comes to traffic this weekend. first the bad, metro could be a mess with track work that will affect seven stations on the red line
michelle obama was going to be really good. you knew bill clinton was going to be really good and you knew president obama was going to be really good. so he was speaking in an early part of the convention and he was not there to sort of do anything other than cheer lead for the president. and that can be a little difficult and if you misstep it you'll get hammered by it. i want to set that as a context. now, the speeches are not necessarily about substance. they are trying to rally the crowd and get people energized. the fact that people are criticizing that speech for not having very much substance is not a big deal to me. he has to overcome that. convention speeches can hurt your reputation as we saw with bill clinton back in '88. but of course you can overcome that as well. >> yes, jerry? >> i think a lot of people have criticism of o'malley about his speech. they say it was short, without substance and all of that. i have to agree with my colleague mike here because he was put in a tough situation. look who he followed the governor of massachusetts who hit a home run twice. you know?
. here you have michelle obama, the mayor of san antonio, texas, the keynoter. hispanic, to try to reaffirm the support he has among hispanics. the vice president and president. i think this is a little bit more about messaging. it's more about some of the core attacks that they'll make against governor romney. >> what does president obama have to do this convention? >> his own records leaves a lot of americans wanting. the reason this is a dead even race, the reason that governor romney is in this thing is because the economy is in the state it is. people feel like after four years things are as bad or worse than they were when president obama came into office. that not the fulfillment of the promise that he had when he ascended to the presidency. he has to deal with that disappointment out there. >> but you talked on something when you talked about the latino vote. it was obvious watching the republican national convention you had suzanne martinez, who spoke in both english and spanish, who is such a diamond in the rough and then you had romney's son who gave his entire speech
